The credit for using guitar an integral part of jazz music goes to Eddie Lang. Similarly, jazz guitarists use round, thick and heavy picks instead of thin and light picks. One pick up that is particularly popular in jazz is the Gibson PAF. A majority of jazz guitarists prefer to use medium to heavy gauge strings and go for neck pick ups. In fact, the unique guitar sound associated with jazz is both a tribute to the skills of jazz guitarists as to the accessories used by them. But what distinguishes their playing is the music. There are some who prefer classical guitars. However, it will be wrong to say that all jazz guitarists use archtops. The latter-day jazz guitarists too preferred the archtops though the development of electric guitars made it possible to produce the loud sound by using amplifiers. The guitars have hollow bodies and a solid wooden top. Jazz guitars of today have many similarities to the acoustic archtops that were being used by the earlier jazz guitarists. Early jazz players used wide-bodied acoustic archtops because of their loud volume. The jazz guitar, one of the mainstays of jazz music, produces the dark and rich tones that have entranced generations of jazz enthusiasts.
